Black Mass (2015) Blu Ray Review

This disc better pay you back, right? As Depp's career has gotten more wildly inconsistent (Tusk anyone?), his work in films that are based on real life crime (Donnie Brasco, Blow, etc.) remain his strength. Besides being full of name actors who make this film even more formidable, Depp absolutely nails every second of screen time given to his portrayal of South Boston's Jimmy Bulger, He's in the zone, he's way the fuck into it and the resulting professionalism seems to push everyone around him into very solid territory. He did get robbed of a best actor nomination (not as much as Benicio Del Toro in "Sicario") but, as is is Depp's wont, his performance is just a few degrees too strange to inspire awards. But strange in the best way. The disc looks Grade A, the supplements are Grade A (with a cool documentary) and the acting, violence, score and overall feel of the film hit all the right marks.
